In the winter, you don’t need to water your lawn as frequently as in the spring, summer, and fall, but it important that you keep an eye on the moisture your lawn is getting. While we usually see some moisture during the winter months in Colorado, we also see plenty of dry periods when you should water your lawn. Here are some helpful tips to guide your winter watering routine.
Watering During Dry Periods
There are dry periods in which it is a good idea to water your lawn. During these dry periods, it is safe to water your lawn one or two times a month. You will want to give your lawn a nice saturation, especially if the forecast continues to look dry.
Ground Temperatures
During the winter, you should water only when the air and ground temperatures are above 40 degrees and there is no snow on the ground. You want to be sure that you don’t water when it is colder out because this can cause the roots of your lawn to freeze, thus killing your grass. Be sure to water in the middle of the day to give the water plenty of time to soak in before the cold evening temperatures set in.
South or West Facing Lawns
If your lawn is south or west facing and gets a lot of direct sunlight, you should focus your winter watering on those areas. They are more likely to dry out and get damaged in the winter. Other things that can cause damage and drying to your lawn in the winter are areas that are hit by reflections from large windows. These spots should also be watered to prevent long term damage to your lawn.
Your lawn should be watered once or twice a month in the winter to keep it healthy. This is especially true if your lawn is new and going through its first Colorado winter!
