How to Take Care of Your Lawn Year-Round

At Bigfoot Turf, we understand that lawn-care is a labor of love! From the beginning of the year until the end, your lawn requires different watering patterns, protection and attention. Use this seasonal list to learn how to take care of your lawn year-round!

Spring

  • Rake up any leftover leaves, twigs and debris from the colder months.
  • Spring is the perfect time to prepare your lawn tools! To ensure clean cuts, sharpen mower blades before you mow your lawn especially for the first mowing of the season.
  • Be sure your mower has fresh gasoline since it is possible that it has accumulated moisture over the winter.
  • Aerate your lawn so water, fertilizers and oxygen can reach the roots of the grass. Pick a day when the soil is damp but not soaked so the aeration machine can work efficiently and aerate as deep as possible.
  • For a healthy lawn, mow often enough so you are removing no more than one third of the grass blade at any one mowing.

Summer

  • With the rising temperatures evaporating your lawn’s moisture, the water requirements of your grass go up. Make sure to water wisely. Lawns can require up to 1/3 inch of water per day. Be aware of temperatures and your lawn’s water requirements for healthy, plush grass.
  • The best weed killer is a healthy lawn. Do not allow weeds to infest your grass because your grass isn’t healthy.
  • Mowing height is important. The taller the grass, the deeper the roots, the fewer the weeds and the more moisture the soil holds in the root zone which means more time between watering. Set your mower to the optimal height between 2 and 3 inches.
  • Regularly clean your mower to prevent the spreading of lawn diseases.
  • Fertilize your lawn to keep it looking green and healthy.

Fall

  • Consistently remove leaves, twigs and debris.
  • Fall is one of the best times to install new sod. Call Bigfoot Turf for an estimate or schedule us to install sod.
  • 1 fall fertilization is worth 2 in the spring. Give your lawn a good fertilization in the fall, to replace nutrients the lawn used during the summer months. Once the weather turns cold, the fertilizer will remain in the soil and feed your lawn’s roots all winter long.
  • Continue to mow your lawn as needed until it goes dormant for the winter.

Winter

  • Apply winter fertilizer at the end of the growing season before the ground freezes.
  • It is important to remove leaves and debris from your lawn in preparation for winter. Leaving undesirable debris on your lawn could create conditions favorable for disease and invite insects and other damaging pests onto your lawn.
