So, you just purchased your first home! Congratulations! Homeownership comes with a lot of excitement and new responsibility. Not only do you need to care for the inside of your house, but you also have to take care of the land surrounding it. Here are some lawn care tips for new homeowners to keep your lawn healthy and green.
What kind of grass is this?
This is the first question you should ask. Determining what kind of grass your lawn is composed of will help you determine how often you should be watering your lawn and at what length you should mow it at. In Colorado, fescues and Kentucky bluegrass are pretty common. Have a lawn expert stop by to tell you what exactly you’re looking at.
Invest in a lawn mower
The size of your lawn is going to help you determine which kind of lawn mower you will need. You can get by with a walk behind lawn mower with smaller yards, but if you have a medium to large yard with a lot of grass, you might want to invest in a riding lawn mower.
Mow correctly
Climate and grass type are going to change the hight in which you should set your blade on your mower. Grass that is too short can cause spots to die off and grass that is too long can make your lawn look like it is out of control. The type of grass will help you determine how short to cut your lawn and how often it needs to be mowed.
Remove weeds
While weeding is tedious, your lawn will benefit greatly from regular weeding. Pulling weeds when they are still young will help prevent them from spreading. Be sure that you have pulled the entire plant, including the root, and if needed, re-seed your grass in that spot if it has become bare. If your lawn becomes overwhelmed with weeds, consider using a herbicide or a natural method to remove weeds.
Fertilize your lawn
In order to maintain a healthy lawn, you are going to need to fertilize it twice a year. The best times to fertilize your lawn are in the spring between April and June, and in the fall between September and November. In the spring, fertilizing gives your lawn extra nutrients to help it come back nice and green. In the winter, fertilizing provides nutrients that your lawn will need over the winter months to ensure that it remains healthy until the spring.
