- Watering. The amount and frequency of water depend on the time of year and require some measuring for accuracy.
- Aerating. Aerate your Kentucky Bluegrass twice a year.
- Fertilizing. Fertilize your grass three times per year.
- Mowing. Kentucky Bluegrass needs to be mowed at different heights, depending on the year.
Watering
In April and May, bluegrass lawns need about an inch of moisture per week, be it from rain, snow or your sprinkler system. Once the temperatures heat up in June, you should increase your watering level to 1.25 inches and then 1.5 inches in July. Once the temperatures start to cool, you should begin to decrease your watering amount by 0.25 inches every month.
To measure your watering amount, place several shallow containers in different areas of your lawn and water for 30 minutes. Measure the depth of the water in your containers and multiply by two to find out how many inches your sprinkler waters per hour.
Aerating
Aeration is essential for keeping your lawn healthy because it relieves the soil of compaction and allows better penetration of air, water, and other nutrients into your soil. It is a great way to stimulate new root growth which makes your lawn fuller and thicker! Here is everything you need to know about aerating your lawn in Colorado. Core aeration is good for all lawns and should be done as soon as possible. We recommend aerating your Kentucky Bluegrass lawn twice a year. Fertilizing
Fertilizing your Kentucky Bluegrass in Colorado is essential to keeping it healthy because nitrogen is the most important nutrient for promoting good turf color and growth. It is best to fertilize about 3 times per year. If your turf is not responding to nitrogen fertilizer, it may be lacking in other nutrients such as phosphorus or iron. To correct this, use a balanced or complete fertilizer. We have done extensive soil tests in the area and designed our fertilizer to work with the soil composition that we have in Northern Colorado. At Bigfoot Turf, we produced our fertilizer to fulfill what typical Northern Colorado soil is lacking to produce a healthy lawn.
Mowing Height
Kentucky Bluegrass lawns in Colorado should be mowed to a height of 2.5 inches in spring and then allowed to grow to 3 or 3.5 inches as the weather warms.
As Northern Colorado’s Premier Turfgrass Producer, we offer an extensive line of turf to meet and exceed expectations. All of our turf is grown specifically to handle Colorado weather patterns. If you have any questions about these tips, please reach out to our team!
