At the beginning of the winter months, it is easy to completely forget about your lawn and the care it needs. Caring for your lawn in late fall and early winter will help your lawn flourish in the spring. Here are some winter lawn to-dos.
Fertilize
You really should fertilize before the first frost or snow in October or early November. As we know in Colorado, there are still some nice days in the winter that are ideal for fertilizing if you haven’t already. Laying fertilizer in the late fall and early winter will allow your lawn to soak up the nutrients through the winter, leading to healthy green grass in the spring.
Avoid Lawn Traffic
During the winter months, your lawn becomes dormant and heavy traffic can cause it to die and not come back in the spring. To avoid lawn traffic, make sure you clear your sidewalks and driveways of snow and ice. That way, people have a clear path to walk on and they won’t harm your lawn by walking on it. You also want to avoid anyone parking on your lawn. This might sound funny, but it happens, and cars can damage your lawn substantially when your grass is dormant.
Clean Up Your Lawn
This winter, be sure to clean your lawn. This could include raking leaves, pine needles, and other debris out of the way. Be sure to also pick up any toys your pets or children leave in the lawn, and move the lawn furniture. These items can cause your lawn to heave dead or thinning spots come spring-time.
It may be winter, but that is no reason to neglect your lawn. Remember to do these few things to prepare your lawn for the upcoming spring.
