Renovation vs. Reconstruction

Which is right for you?

renovation of a baseball field

When determining a field renovation or reconstruction, all the problems the field has must be considered. Many people look at a field and think that adding new material to the existing material will solve all the problems. To help you decide if your field needs a renovation or a reconstruction, we outlined some key differences below.

How to Tell if Your Field Needs a Renovation:

No matter how much maintenance you do, a minor field problem will grow into a large one. And this is true about an athletic field. Even if the field appears to be in good condition and does not appear to be a concern, it will almost certainly need to be replaced at some point in time. Make sure to inspect your field frequently, rather than just looking at it. Take a walk over it to see where the issues are most likely to occur. Especially these:

Compaction

Compaction is almost certain to occur as a result of some traffic and routine use. This is the most common problem on a sports field. The field will not drain adequately if it is compacted. It retains water, causing the soil to become anaerobic, resulting in staleness or death. The roots will not penetrate the soil, leaving them exposed to dryness and additional damage from the stress mentioned above.

Amending the Soil

Make sure you get an expert to assist with soil amendment. At Bigfoot Turf, we can assist with chemical and physical tests to find additions and adjustments to help your field maintain and prosper. Adding compost can considerably improve the humus level in your soil by adding compost. It can aid soil structure by reducing compaction, retaining moisture, and improving water penetration.

Sand

Sand is unlikely to help with drainage concerns, and it may even worsen compaction. If you wish to add sand to your fields, speak to a professional landscaper. They’ll know what kind of sand you’ll need and how much you’ll need to keep your field in good shape.

How to Tell if Your Field Needs Reconstruction:

Many have worn-out, aging, or poorly built athletic fields or golf courses that can be restored and reconstructed to extend their life or add new features. Often, such fields or playing grounds were not created or maintained to the highest standards, or they are the product of ruined repair attempts.

Bigfoot turf offers several solutions to these issues, including repairing damaged sports fields and enhancing their ability to endure play and the ravages of time.
