How Laser Grading Works

Laser Grading is an operation that establishes a level or specified slope across a surface. At Bigfoot Turf, we use a dual-plane laser that enables us to return fields to the top playing conditions. This process uses a sophisticated laser transmitter installed on a tripod that emits a thin 360-degree rotating beam of light. This establishes a grading system for the work area. The elevation of the laser beam is detected by a laser receiver positioned on a mast attached to the leveling blade, which communicates the information to an onboard computer. The computer delivers commands to a hydraulic valve that regulates the blade’s lift cylinders. According to the signals, the valve raises or lowers the machine’s cutting edge, maintaining proper height.

Why it’s Important

An uneven, inconsistent surface can lead to puddling, soft areas, holes, and lips, leading to field failure. When we laser grade an athletic field, we ensure that the new material will be at a consistent depth. In addition, these smoother infields improve drainage, so the next time there is a big rainstorm, the water will flow off the surface and adequately drain, preserving the integrity of your baseball diamond. A field undergoes a lot of wear and tear after each game, so proper maintenance will keep the small issues from becoming big problems.
